Historisch Schermgilde Limburg

Historical European Martial Arts, or HEMA, is both a modern sport and an ancient art. Drawing from historical treatises written by sword masters of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, European martial traditions are being rediscovered, interpreted, and brought back to life.

Swordfighting in Limburg
Since 2016, HEMA has also been practiced in Limburg through the Historisch Schermgilde Limburg (HSGL). Our club brings together a diverse and enthusiastic group of members united by a shared passion for the unique blend of history, technique, and physical challenge that HEMA offers.

Our training originally focused on the longsword and rapier, but over time our curriculum has expanded to include sabre and dagger as well.
Through structured lessons, open training, sparring sessions, and collaboration with other schools, we continually explore both the historical sources and their practical applications.

Motto
Our maxim, Ignoramus et ignorabimus – “we do not know, and we will never know” – reflects our approach to HEMA. We can never fully reconstruct how people fought in the past with absolute certainty. That’s why we combine source study with interpretation, experimentation, and hands-on practice in a continuous pursuit of insight, skill, and historical nuance.
